It turns out that the eecs.berkeley.edu mail servers *do* allow relaying
from the instructional machines.  So for this part, you should instead
try to send mail to a recipient of <vern at icir.org> via calmail.berkeley.edu
(which is where the MX record for berkeley.edu points).
