Has anyone used a project called Kaitai Struct? It seems to solve a similar
problem as Spicy.

I looked at it a while ago. From what I gathered back then, it looked 
like it is quite a bit more restricted in what you can express in the 
language.

But - as I said that was quite a while ago :)

It appears to still be that way. You define a specification in a YAML like
language. The most it seems you can do beyond identifying and typing fields
is creating your own type.
