Our goal was to build a service that shows you in detail what's up with your network connection, whatever network you might find yourself in, whenever something's not working, or when you're simply curious. All you need is a Java-enabled browser and a visit to: http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu We hope you'll find the site as useful as we do. We're very keen to hear your feedback, whether it's interesting results, suggestions for improvements, or any issues you've encountered. Go forth and netalyze! I can't think of a reason right now why we shouldn't use the high-level API here. Also, I just checked the code and we're neither using the session ID in the URLs of these tests, nor are we setting any cache-busting headers in request or response. We should add a new server-side command for these tests that handles this nicely. -- Cheers, Christian From brando.fouts at gmail.com Mon Jun 15 19:17:36 2009 From: brando.fouts at gmail.com (Brandon Fouts) Date: Mon, 15 Jun 2009 19:17:36 -0700 Subject: [Netalyzr] openSUSE 11.1 and FireFox 3.0.10 Message-ID: <609b18560906151917o36d2b76dk1f8a7feecae2fc47@mail.gmail.com> Howdy all - SUSE 11.1 Firefox 3.0.10 I'm trying. Installed Java 1.6 (update 13) I used YaST. added below and checked for updates - none found. http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Java:/packages/openSUSE_11.1/ I also added Firefox Java Console 6.0.02 cleared cache, restarted both Firefox and SUSE This doesn't seem to work as the [Preferences] button is grayed out and does not respond. Going to SUSE Applications - the "Java Web Start" does seem to do anything as nothing starts up. Yes, I checked web-browser for JAVA enabled (as is JavaScript) Java Plug-in Control Panel isn't responding and cleared cache Can I do/send any info that would help? Thanks for the feedback. Could you clarify what is the problem -- are you trying to get the console to work, or do you not get the "Start analysis" link on the front page (i.e., applets don't work)? If the latter, what happens when you go to: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1 ? If Java is working and there is a different problem, then Java console output is almost always the first step for us to help you. -- Cheers, Christian From christian at icir.org Tue Jun 16 16:29:47 2009 From: christian at icir.org (Christian Kreibich) Date: Tue, 16 Jun 2009 16:29:47 -0700 Subject: [Netalyzr] A big thank you to our users Message-ID: <1245194987.6950.7.camel@localhost.localdomain> Folks, The Netalyzr has been live for a week and at this point more than 30,000 people have used it to analyze their network connectivity. Many thanks to all of you for trying the service and sending feedback. We have received a ton of it, including suggestions for reducing user interface complexity, more helpful explanations for less technical users, and suggestions for additional tests. We've even nailed a bug or two along the way. We'll spend the next few weeks integrating your suggestions to improve the Netalyzr. As always, feel free to ask questions or report signs of trouble. 'Java Console 6.0.02' Extension in FireFox and 'Java Web Start' (from SuSE Applications Menu) does nothing - I do not know what they are suppose to do. (and I do not know exactly where Java-Script comes from, but I did make sure the Java-Script box was checked in the FireFox web browser) I see SuSE Applications Menu now has 'Java Plugin Control Panel' and this control panel seems to work just fine. IMHO, I would add 'java-plugin' to your FAQ about java JRE -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= www.psnug.org Puget Sound Network Users Group Building Technical Skills Through Teamwork And Education. It is really very impressive. I work for NIC.br (Brazilian Network Information Center), a non-profit brazilian organization linked to the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (http://www.cgi.br/internacional/index.htm), and right now we are involved with some projects intended to measure the quality of the Brazilian Internet infrastructure. Among them, we have one java applet, we called "SIMET" (portuguese acronym for Traffic Measurement System), intended to measure some of the characteristics of last mile links, as bandwidth, latency and jitter (http://simet.ceptro.br - sorry, portuguese only). Running your software we start wondering if you intend to release it as an open source project, or if, by any other means, you could permit us to incorporate some of the tests we do not have yet in our own software. I am also involved with SIMON project (http://simon.lacnic.net - http://lacnic.net/documentos/lacnicxii/presentaciones/napla/08_Jose_Miguel_Guzman.pdf). It has a very specific objective today, but I am also wondering if we couldn't use some of your code into it in the near future. Best Regards, Antonio M.
