FYI, if you are using the default-system-config statement for
interface taphush, then you shouldn't specify "vif tarhush".
Though, I am not sure that it matters for the problem you have with
pinging the local IP address.

As Mike asked already, what is the output of "ifconfig -a"
(or "ip addr" in case of Linux). This should be the starting point
in clearing the pinging the local IP mistery.
