Hi Pepo:
The Vyatta OFR supports multicast and may be a very good fit for your
network. I'll be happy to help you with a comparative analysis with a
different solution such as one from Cisco.
A comparable benchmark device for you to consider could be a Cisco 2821 or
3825 if you are looking at GigE speeds and feeds. Even without getting into
firewall/security feature pack upgrade, a 2821 chassis with a base IP only
image with 2 GigE ports is listed at $3895 plus a 10-12% smartnet support
contract for 1 year. [Please refer to the Vyatta Product and Services Store
at http://www2.vyatta.com/store to compare the price differential with
respect to an OFR software subscription or the OFR appliance. Also a data
point for you to consider here is that for bidirectional LAN2LAN routing,
the OFR appliance far outperforms the 2821]. Depending upon your application
you may realize even further cost savings by deploying an open source
solution such as Vyatta OFR/Xorp in lieu of a Cisco 3800.
If you need a more detailed discussion of feature/pricing comparison, please
send me a note with the following:
Rough topology & Size of your network/# of units you are looking at? What
are the applications you are looking to run on this box? Are you looking to
run firewall/security features? Are you also looking to deploy this as a WAN
gateway device? If so what is the WAN interface on the box? Any other
specific features or routing protocols you are looking for?
Regards,
- Sanjoy

Subject: [Vyatta-users] Vyatta vs CISCO
Hi friends...
I have to choose equipment (hardware and software) to implement multicast in
my university LAN, and I wanna choose Vyatta/Xorp, but I have to specify the
features and cost of the equipment versus other solution like CISCO but in
this I dont have any idea of the equipment that will be necesary.
Please give me a hand because it is so important to finish my project and
buy
the hardware/software.
A lot of thanks.
