I used this type of System as VPN Router and achieved about 55 MiB/s
routing throughput where with 103 prefixes:
Software: XORP 1.6, FreeBSD 7.1 with device polling and HZ=3000
Hardware: VIA C7 CPU, 2 x very cheap Realtek Gigabit Ethernet
