[Xorp-users] PIM SM Register Messages

I have a question about PIM-SM register messages from the DR that is on the same subnet as the sender. Is it possible for the DR to not be on the same subnet as the sender and still tunnel register messages towards the RP? So for example if I don't control the network with the sources (video encoders) and they are using something like PIM-Dense-Mode to flood the traffic into my network (one hop away), can I define my interfaces as PIM-SM and create my own RP even though I do not have any router directly connected to the sources? How does the DR know that the source is directly connected or not?....by IP subnet?

Thanks,
Greg
