 If it's kept, seems like there's room to improve the message.  For one,
 changing "error" to "warning" might help.

 This might warrant another ticket, but does it make sense to store that
 state data in a well-defined directory like `$prefix/var/lib` (or whatever
 the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard says is the place for state data) ?
