 I did most of the cleanup mentioned in the ticket in `topic/dist-cleanup`;
 here's the remainder for someone to pickup:

 1) I did a pass over READMEs to make sure all info was relevant/updated,
 but I didn't know how to define how they should be "unified"
 2) I didn't touch the `broctl` README; I thought there's probably enough
 unmerged stuff that I should wait to see what the final master looks like,
 there's #503 already to make sure we don't forget to update it
 3) I didn't change or add any license/copyright/COPYING stuff
