Yep. Snow Leopard ships with an openssl < 1.0 but macports has one > 1.0.

FWIW, I tried it on my Snow Leopard with macports and it worked for me:

-- Found OpenSSL: 
/opt/local/lib/libssl.dylib;/opt/local/lib/libcrypto.dylib

$ openssl version
OpenSSL 1.0.0d 8 Feb 2011
