 I can do the alternate path option, but I'm not sure adding a disable
 option makes sense right now since it's only used by the elasticsearch
 writer.  It's more useful to add options for ./configure to enable/disable
 *features*, not just particular dependencies.  So the lacking option in
 this case looks like --disable-elasticsearch.
