 A couple of minor comments: (1) While it does appear to be unneeded, one
 could imagine a variant &noredef which means "do not allow any further
 redef'ing".  I'm not sure whether that's something we will ever wind up
 considering, though.  (2) In general, tests of attributes are a Good
 Thing.  But for whether this particular construct does anything at all,
 the direct way to tell is of course inspecting the code rather than trying
 to observe it externally.
