I pushed an updated version of the installation instructions to topic/johanna/os-x-openssl; they now mention openssl as an additional requirement for OS X versions < 10.11, besides caf and swig.

I also removed the outdated information about mac binaries (which we no longer provide, even for the current release)

Could someone perhaps take a short look at that and just merge it if it looks ok?
